Classification of matter

Classification of matter:  Early Indian and Greek philosophers thought that everything in this world is made up of five elements: air, water, earth, sky, fire. Hence they classified matter as five basic elements ‘Panch Tatva’. Modern day scientists classify matter on the basis of physical and chemical properties.

  • Physical Classification: On the basis of physical properties, matter has been classified as Solids, Liquid and Gases.
  • Chemical Classification: On the basis of chemical properties, matter has been classified as elements, compounds and mixtures. There are about 117 different types of elements and numerous compounds can be made from them.
