Average Speed

Average Speed

Average speed of an object in a time interval is equal to the total distance travelled divided by the total time taken.

Average;Speed (s_{avg}) = frac{Total; Distance; travelled}{ Total; time; taken}

Different units of speed: The SI unit of speed is meter per second. Another commonly used is kilometer per hour. When we talk about speed of aeroplanes and cars, it would be more appropriate to use km/h than m/s.

  Let us take an example to understand this concept :

Illustration 1: In traveling  form Pune to Nagpur, Rahul drove his bike for 2 hours at the speed 6 kmph and 3 hours at 70 kmph. Find his average speed

Solution We know that,

Distance = Speed x Time

So, in 2 hours, distance covered = 2 x 60 = 120 km

In the next 3 hours, distance covered = 3 x 70 = 210 km

Total distance covered = 120 + 210 = 330 km

Total time  =  2 + 3 = 5 hrs

Average;Speed (s_{avg}) = frac{Total; Distance; travelled}{ Total; time; taken}

Average speed :

 frac{330}{5} :=:66:kmph
