Gap Filling of Articles
Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. Example : After the long day, the cup of tea tasted particularly good. By using the article the, we've shown that it was one specific day that was long and one specific cup of tea that tasted good.
Articles (a, an, the) A/An: - Use with : Singular Countable Nouns. Do not use with : Plural nouns, uncountable nouns and abstract nouns
Special Note : Use 'A' before nouns beginning with a consonant sound. Use 'An' before nouns beginning with a vowel sound.
1. Before a Singular Countable Noun when it is mentioned for the first time and represents no particular person or thing.
2. Before Singular Countable Noun which is used as an example of a class of things.
3. In expressions of price, speed, ratio (in the sense of "per"). For example : Rs. a kilo; Rs. 100 a metre; ninety kilometres an hour; three times a day
Usage of The : -
1. Before unique objects/group of objects.
2. Before a noun made definite as a result of being mentioned a second time.
3. Before a noun representing only one particular thing (by reason of locality)
4. Before superlatives and ordinals like first, second etc. used as adjectives.
5. Before names of seas, rivers, groups of islands, chains of mountains, plural names of countries. deserts, regions. For example : the Indian Ocean; the Himalayas; the Andaman and Nicobar; the U.S.A.; the Ganges
