British Paramountacy In Bengal

Bengal

  • Bengal of the Mughal period (18th century) included the modern West Bengal province, the whole of Bangladesh, Bihar and Orissa.
  • It was the most prosperous state of Mughal India During the time of the first independent ruler of Bengal, Murshidkuli Khan, and his successors Shujauddin and Alivardi Khan, Bengal became so rich that it came to be called the 'Paradise of India'.
  • The Dutch, the British and the French established their commercial settlements in Bengal, of which Hooghly was the most important port.
  • The population of Bengal increased from 15,000 (1705 AD) to around one lakh (1750 AD). Dhaka and Murshidabad were two densely populated districts.
