Rise of British Paramountacy

  • On 31 December 1000 AD, the British East India Company formed by order of Queen Elizabeth and came to India for trade. The Company started trade by establishing trading houses in Surat in 1607 AD and Masulipatnam (South India) in 1612 AD.
  • Apart from the British Portuguese, Dutch, French also came to India for trading purposes. Among them, the Portuguese came first (1498 AD) and finally the French (1664 AD).
  • Soon, business competition started in these companies for India's profitable trade, which was also the result of global colonial competition of these countries.
  • In 1664, the French East India Company (Campagnie des Indes) was founded by the Minister, Colbert, of French Emperor Louis-XVI, and France established trade relations with India for the first time.
