Tipu Sultan

Tipu Sultan (1782-1799 AD)

  • Tipu ascended the throne of Mysore after the death of his father Hyder Ali in 1782 AD, in political foresight, he was equivalent to his father, Hyder.
  • He was a well-educated ruler, well versed in Arabic, Persian, Urdu and Kannada languages. He introduced new currency, new weighing unit and new calendar (Samvat) under its new experiments.
  • Tipu assumed the title of Sultan and issued coins in his name in 1787 AD.
  • The coins issued by Tipu had pictures of Hindu deities and figures of Hindu calendar (Samvat).
