Minerals' are natural objects that are dug out of the ground. The places from which the mineral is extracted are called 'mines'.
Mineral is a natural, chemical element or compound that is formed by abiotic actions.
Classification of Minerals:
Minerals are mainly classified as Metallic, Non-Metallic and Energy Minerals.
Metallic Minerals:
Minerals containing metals are called metallic minerals, like gold, silver, tungsten, etc . They are tough and shiny and do not break when hit. They are often found in igneous rocks. It can be divided into two parts- These are further classified as-
Ferrous Minerals: Metallic minerals that contain iron content and are used in iron and steel industry are called Ferrous minerals. They are often found in rocky rocks. Such as iron - ore, manganese, tungsten, nickel etc. A ferro - alloy is an alloy of iron with some other metals. These minerals account for about three-fourths of the total value of the production of metallic minerals. After meeting the internal demands, India exports a fairly large amount of ferrous minerals. These minerals have much importance as they -provide a strong base for the development of metallurgical industries . The distribution of ferrous minerals — Iron ore and manganese is discussed below:
Non - Ferrous Minerals: Metallic minerals in which iron fragments do not exist are called non - ferrous minerals. They are found in all types of rocks. Such as gold, silver, lead, bauxite, tin, magnesium etc. India has only a few reserves of non-ferrous minerals that are not very adequate. Metallic minerals in which iron fragments do not exist are called non - ferrous minerals. They are found in all types of rocks. Such as gold, silver, lead, bauxite, tin, magnesium etc.However, these minerals which include (e.g. copper, zinc, bauxite and gold) play a vital role in various industries, i.e. metallurgical, engineering and electrical industries
