Akbar

Akbar (1556-1605 AD)

Jalaluddin Muhammad Akbar, also known as Shahanshah Akbar-e-Azam or Akbar the Great (1542 -1605), was the third Mughal Emperor.

  • He was of Timurid descent; the son of Humayun, and the grandson of Babur, the ruler who founded the Mughal dynasty in India.
  • At the end of his reign in 1605, the Mughal Empire covered most of the Northern and Central India and was one of the most powerful empires of is age.
  • He spent his youth learning to hunt, run, and fight, but he never learned to read or write. The lifestyle of his childhood made him a daring, powerful and a brave warrior but he remained illiterate throughout his life. Although this did not hinder his search of knowledge as it is said whenever he use to go to bed, there would be somebody reading for the king.

  • Akbar was born on 15 October 1542 AD in the Fort of Rana Veerasal in Amarkot. Akbar served as the Subedar of Ghazni and Lahore during his childhood. During Humayun's death, Akbar was fighting with Sikander Suri in Punjab.
  • Following the chaos over the succession of Sher Shah Suri's son Islam Shah, Humayun conquered Delhi again in 1555. leading an army partly provided by his Persian ally Tahmasp I.
  • Akbar was crowned at Kalanaur (Gurdaspur, Punjab) on February 14, 1556 AD by Mirza Abul Qasim under the patronage of Akbar's mentor Bairam Khan. At the tune of the coronation, Akbar's age was only 13 years and 4 months, Akbar assumed the title of 'Emperor'.
  • Akbar ruled till 1560 AD under the patronage of Bairam Khan. Bairam Khan was a Shia Muslim from Persia and came with Humayun from Persia. Akbar appointed Bairam Khan as Wazir (Wakil-us-Sultanate). Bairam Khan's greatest achievement as a protector was to defeat 'Hemu' and destroy Akbar's rivals.
  • In 1560 AD, Akbar defeated Bairam Khan in the Battle of Tiwara.
