Stupa - A Significant Memorial

Stupa

  • The literal meaning of 'Stupa' is 'a heap of something'. The first mention of the stupa is found in the Rigveda The stupa was an earthen platform that was built over the deceased's funeral pyre or its ashes.
  • After the death of Mahatma Buddha, eight stupas were built on his remains. Later, 84000 stupas were built by the Mauryan ruler Ashoka.
  •          Stupas can usually be divided into four parts-

  • Relic Stupa - in which the relics or remains of the Buddha, his disciples, are kept.
  • Object Stupa - in which the items interred are objects belonged to the Buddha or his disciples. such as a begging bowl or robe, or important Buddhist scriptures
  • Commemorative Stupa -  built to commemorate events in the lives of Buddha or his disciples
  • Votive Stupa, constructed to commemorate visits or to gain spiritual benefits, usually at the site of prominent stupas which are regularly visited
