(1) First Anglo-Maratha War (1775-1782 AD)

  • The reason for the first phase of Anglo-Maratha war was due to the mutual quarrels of the Marathas and the ambitions of the British.
  • In 1775 AD, the Treaty of Surat was signed between Raghunath Rao and the British, which led to the First Anglo-Maratha War.
  • The First Anglo-Maratha War ended with the Treaty of Salbai (between the British and Mahadji Scindia) in 1882 and established long-term peace by returning the conquered territories to each other.
