Madhav Rao I (1761-1772 AD)

  • Aggrieved by the Marathas defeat in the Third Battle of Panipat, Balaji's son Madhav Rao I became Peshwa after Balaji's sudden death (23 June 1761 AD).
  • His uncle Raghunath Rao, the eldest responsible member of the Peshwa family, was made his regent.
  • Madhav Rao reclaimed his authority over North India by defeating the Nizams in 1763 AD. Hyder Ali of Mysore in 1771 AD, defeating the Ruhels and defeating Rajput kingdoms and Jats.
  • In 1763, a Treaty of Rakshasa-Bhuvan was signed between Madhav Rao I and the Nizam.
