Ashoka and Buddhism

  •  Initially Ashoka was a follower of Brahmin religion He was a worshiper of Shaivism according to Kalihana's Rajatarangini. According to Deepavansh and Mahavansh, Ashoka took initiation of Buddhism from a seven-year-old Buddhist monk named Night fourth year of his rule.
  • Ashoka first visited Buddhist Gaya in the tenth year of his reign and went to Lumbini forest in the twentieth year of the coronation. According to the Rummindei Inscription, he declared Lumbini forest as tax-free, taking only 1/8 part as tax.
