  • Cause of Rebellion

  • The Revolt of 1857 was a result of the discontent of the sepoys with the character of colonial rule, their policies, public dissatisfaction with British rule and their hatred for foreign rule.
  • The policies of the British caused economic exploitation of the country and destruction of the traditional economic structure of the country. A large number of farmers, artisans and hand-craftsmen, traditional landlords and chiefs became poor.
  • The policies of land and revenue and the system of law and administration of the British further increased this discontent.
  • Land was taken away from farmers who could not pay the rent. In addition, 12 major and many small famines (between 1770 and 1857) further worsened the situation. Similarly, many landlords also became fearful of the demand for land revenue, the seizure of land and rights of their landlords and their situation in the village was reduced. Their dissatisfaction was further heightened by traders, officials and ushers taking their place.
  • The corruption in the staff and administration at the lower levels severely affected the general public.
