The President

The President: 

The President is the head of the state. In our political system, the head of the state exercises only nominal powers. Thus, the President is like the Queen of Britain, whose functions are to a large extent ceremonial. The President supervises the overall functioning of all the political institutions in the country, so that they operate in harmony to achieve the objectives of the state.

The President of the country is known as executive head of the state and commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces. Also, he is referred to as the first citizen of the nation.

  • He is considered as the symbol of solidarity, unity, and integrity of the country. The President of the country is a vital part of the Union Executive. 
  • The President is elected by the members of an electoral college consisting of the elected members of both the Houses of Parliament and the elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of States and the Union Territories of Delhi and Pondicherry.
