Mahatma Gandhi and National Movement

  • Gandhiji was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar town of Gujarat. His full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi After primary education, he went to England to study law from where he returned to India, but he went to South Africa in connection with a case. While staying here, Gandhiji fought against the atrocities perpetrated by the British rulers on Indians, during this time he developed his non-violent way of fighting atrocities i.e. 'Satyagraha'.
  • He returned to India in 1915 AD after living in South Africa for nearly 22 years. In India, Gandhiji was highly influenced by the thoughts of Gopal Krishna Gokhale and began to consider him as his political mentor At the time when Gandhiji returned to India, the First World War was going on, in which Gandhiji helped the Government, he was honoured with the title of Keasr-e. Hind. In the days of war. Gandhiji encouraged Indian youths to enroll in the army, for which some people begun to call him as sergeant recruiting in the army Gandhiji established Satyagraha Ashram on the banks of Sabarmati near Ahmedabad in 1915 AD when he came to India
