High Level Language

What does High-Level Language (HLL) Mean?

A high-level language is any programming language that enables development of a program in a much more user-friendly programming context and is generally independent of the computer's hardware architecture.

  • A high level language is an advanced computer programming language, which is not limited to a computer.
  • It is easier to understand. Today, there are dozens of high-level languages. Some examples include BASIC, C, FORTAN, Java, and Pascal.
  • Working at a high level of abstraction does not necessarily preclude runtime efficiency of the implementation. Many modern languages (e.g. C++. Common Lisp, Ada Language) aim to provide access to low level elements of the implementation while retaining means to develop at a high level of abstraction.
