Errors in the use of Articles

Errors in the use of Articles:  The word a / an and the are called Article. They come before nouns.

A) The choice between ‘a’ and ‘an’ is determined by sound. Before a word beginning with a vowel sound,  ‘an’ is used. Similarly, before a word beginning with consonant sound, ‘a’ is used.  

  • An apple; an enemy ; an orange ; an hour ; an heir.  It should be noticed that the words hour, honest, heir, begin with a vowel sound, as the initial consonant ‘h’ is silent.
  • A boy ; A union ; A horse ; A European ; A university ;A girl
  • B) We use ONE (or more) instead of A/AN when the number is important. 

  • There is only one exit from the railway station . (Incorrect)
  • There is only an exit from the railway station. (Correct)
  • C) A’ is used instead of ‘per”.

  • CNG is sold at Rs. twenty-five per litre. (Incorrect)
  • CNG is sold at Rs. twenty-five a litre.  (Correct)
  • D)  Use THE with superlatives such as “the best”, “the biggest”, “the most important”, “the least interesting”, etc.

  • This is the best evening ever.  (Correct)
  • E)  English speakers often use THE plus a singular noun when they talk about or make generalizations about certain topics, including:

  • inventions (the steam engine, the plane, the light bulb)
  • currencies (the dollar, the euro, the yen)
  • body parts (the head, the eye, the ear)
  • Example :  The Wright brothers invented the aeroplane.

    F)  The word same and whole are preceded by "THE" : 

  • A whole milk turned sour.  (Incorrect)
  • The whole milk turned sour.   (Correct)
