Was Able

Use of Was Able :  Be able to  is not a modal verb. It is simply the verb be plus on adjective (able) followed by the infinitive. We consider it as a modal because we sometimes use it instead of can and could. We use be able to, to talk about ability.

Structure of be able to: Subject + be + able + to-infinitive

Notice, that be able to is possible in all tenses, for example:

  • I am able to write .
  • I was able to drive.
  • I will be able to dance.
  • I have been able to drive.
  • Used with verbs:

  • I am able to go with you.
  • They are able to go together.
  • He seems able to do the work.  (seems, feels)
  • Used with adverbs:

  • I am quite able to walk home alone. (quite, perfectly)
  • They are not financially able to buy a house yet. (financially)
  • The child is not mentally able to do something so difficult.  (mentally, physically)
  • I was barely able to see the small letters. (barely, hardly)
