Skeleton, the supportive framework of an animal body. Organisms that have skeleton made up of bones are called as vertebrates. Invertebrates on the other hand do not have skeletal made up of bones. In this section, we will study about protective bone structures present around brain and spinal cord. Brain is protected by skull and spinal cord is protected by vertebral column.
The skull is the bony structure that surrounds and protects your brain. It contains holes for your eyes, ears, nose and mouth. The upper part is made up of 8 flat bones form the brain box or cranium which encloses and protects our brain .The face and jaw contain 14 bones. Your teeth are fixed to the jaw bones. The lower jaw bone is the only movable bone in the skull. It enables you to chew food and talk.
There is a long hard bony structure which is not very smooth. This is the backbone. It is not smooth because it is made up of a number of small bones. It consists of 33 small bones called the vertebrae. The small bone join together to form a strong column called the vertebral column. These are joined to each other. The joints allow slight movement of the vertebrae. This is why you can bend and twist your back. The backbone is attached to the base of the skull. It forms the central supporting rod for the skeleton. Each vertebra has a hole in it. The delicate organ of your body called the spinal cord passes through these holes. Thus, the backbone protects the spinal cord. The backbone is also called the spine or the vertebral column.
