Major Fasts Prevalent In Haryana

The most important fasts of Haryana region are ax follows:

Chamahi Atham Sanjhi

  • Devi (Shakti) Pooja is held in Haryana twice very year. It is held in Chaitra (March - April) as well as Ashwin (September - October). It is known as Chamahi Atham (Once in 6 months).
  • This festival starts after 'Petri Amavasya'. Goddess Sanjhi (Durga) worshiped by the girls and women. The images of the Goddess are made of mud and molded into various shapes. Everyday women are invited for singing bhajans and performing aarti.
  • Nirjala Gyas/Ekadashi

  • Nirjala Gyas or Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Jyestha (May - June).
  • Nirjala fast (fast without water) is undertaken by the women for their husband's longer life.
  • It is considered to be the most sacred of all Ekadashis.
  • Pooja is offered to Lord Vishnu to seek his grace. People believed, that offering cold Sharbat is a pious act.
  • Durga Vrat

    Fast for Goddess Durga is undertaken on the Ashtami of every month. The first fast is undertaken in the month of Shravana (July - August) on the 8th day of Shukla Paksha.

  • On this day, the weapons of Goddess Durga are worshiped. Goddess Durga is offered flowers, chandan, dhoop, etc. Girls are offered with delicious food as a part of this vrat.
