Perimeter of Rectangle

The perimeter of a rectangle is defined as the sum of all the sides of a rectangle. For any polygon, the perimeter formulas are the total distance around its sides. In the case of a rectangle, the opposite sides of a rectangle are equal and so, the perimeter will be twice the width of the rectangle plus twice the height of the rectangle and it is denoted by the alphabet “P”.

Hence, The perimeter of a rectangle, P = 2 ( l+b) units, where

“l” is the length of the rectangle and “b” is the breadth of the rectangle

Perimeter of a Rectangle Formula

Illustration: Find the perimeter of a rectangle whose length is 9 cm and width is 16 cm.

Solution: Given, Length = 9 cm, Breadth or Width = 16 cm

Perimeter of A Rectangle= 2(Length + Breadth)

                                    = 2(9 + 16) cm

                                   = 2 x 25 cm

                                  = 50cm

Therefore, the Perimeter of a rectangle= 50 cm

Illustration:  The lid of a rectangular box of sides 40 cm by 10 cm is sealed all round with tape. What is the length of the tape required?

Solution: Given: length of rectangular lid = 40 cm and width of the rectangular lid = 10 cm

As the lid is sealed round with tape, Hence the length of the tape required can be found by finding the perimeter of the rectangular lid.

Hence, perimeter of the rectangular lid = 2(Length + Breadth)

                                                             = 2(40 + 10) cm

                                                            small =2times 50

                                                            = 100 cm or 1 m

Hence, the length of tape required = 1 m

Illustration: Jack wants to put a lace border all around a rectangular table cover, 3 m long and 2 m wide. Find the length of the lace required by Jack.

Solution: Length of the rectangular table cover = 3 m

               The breadth of the rectangular table cover = 2 m
