Direct Speech - Changes In Personal Pronoun

Direct Speech - Changes in Personal Pronoun:

When reporting a speech the pronoun should be changed according to the relationship of the speaker to the person whose speech is being reported. If the spoken words contain a pronoun or determiner in the first or second person, this often changes to a different person in direct speech: The third person remains the same.There is also used quotation marks in direct speech.

  • Salil admitted that he would have rold his friend to lend him his car.  (Indirect Speech)
  • "I would have told my mother to lend me his car", admitted Salil.(Direct Speech)
  • The teacher said we ought to obey our traffic rules properly.(Indirect Speech)
  •  The teacher said, "You ought to obey your traffic rules properly".(Direct Speech)
  • (A)  Personal Pronoun : - While changing into direct speech, the personal pronoun of the reported speech are changed as per following :

  • First person pronoun According to subject of reporting verb.
  • Second person pronoun According to object of reporting verb.
  • Third  person pronoun No change.
  • The 'number' and 'case' of the 'person' do not change in direct speech. Learn well the following table to understand the change of personal pronouns :

    (C)  Conjuction 'that' is not used  while changing into direct speech. e.g.

           Reena says that she is joining new coaching center.                                           Indirect

            Reena says, "I am joining new coaching center".                                                 Direct

    Look at the methodology of transformation into direct speech :

    Sentence (a) :

  • As certain the tense of the reporting verb 'says'. It is present tense. So, there will be no change in the tense of the reported speech.
  • Reporting verb 'says' will remain unchanged.
  • The personal pronoun 'I' (first person) will change according to subject of the reporting verb 'Reena'.
  •                 (b)  She tells Meghna that she is doing her homework.                              Indirect

               She says to Meghna, "You are doing your homework".                           Direct

    Look at the methodology of transformation into direct speech :

    Sentence (b) :

  • As certain the tense of the reporting verb. It is present tense. So, there will be no change in the tense of the reported speech.
  • The reportying verb 'tells' changes to 'says to'.
  • The personal pronoun 'you' (second person) will change according to the object of the reporting verb 'Meghna'. So, it will change  into 'she' and the objective pronoun 'her' will changed into 'your'.
