Forms of Verbs

Regular and Irregular Verbs

Verbs take different forms according to the tense. The present tense form of the verb is called the base form.

Regular Verbs : - Verbs in the past tense and past participle form take an - ed or -en or -t. Such verbs, with the suffix  -ed, -en or -t are called regular verbs.

For Example : - I advised you to slow down. Here , advised is a regular verb as it ends with ed .

Irregular Verbs : - Verbs that do not have -ed, -en or -t as suffix in their past and past participle form are called irregular or strong verbs. catch and go have their past forms as caught and went and not the usual -ed or -en or -t in their past tense forms.

For Example: You should have seen Akash’s face when she got him surprise. Here , seen is a irregular verb as it has different past participle form . Seen is the third form of main verb see .
