Factors

Factors: Factors are whole numbers that are multiplied together to produce another number. The original numbers are factors of the product number. If a x b = c then a and b are factors of c.

Factor, in mathematics, a number or algebraic expression that divides another number or expression evenly i.e., with no remainder. For example, 3 and 6 are factors of 12 because 12 ÷ 3 = 4 exactly and 12 ÷ 6 = 2 exactly. The other factors of 12 are 1, 2, 4, and 12.

Note: 1. Every number is a factor of itself.

2. 1 is a factor of every number.

3. Every factor of a number is an exact divisor of that number.

4. Every factor is less than or equal to the given number.

5. Number of factors of a given number are finite.

Illustration: Find the factors of 36.

Solution: 36 = 1 X 36

              36 = 2 X 18

              36 = 4 X 9

              36 = 6 X 6

              36 = 3 X 12

Hence, the factors of 36 are 1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18 and 36.

Illustration: Find the factors of 68.

Solution: We have

68 = 1 X 68

68 = 2 X 34

68 = 4 X 17

68 = 17 X 4

Hence, the factors of 68 are 1,2,4,17,34 and 68.
