Reasons for forests degradation are :

Cutting of trees : or agricultural purpose results in loss of habitats of plants and animals, replanting of trees in a forest is very important part of conservation. In order to conserve forests the prevention of cutting down of trees is essential.

Excessive grazing: Increasing population of domestic animals has led to overgrazing which must be controlled to save forests.

Poisoning of Biodiversity: Avoiding disposal of wastes from cities, agricultural fields and industries into forests.

Conservation of forests : Forest conservation is the practice of planting and maintaining forested areas for the benefit and sustainability of future generations. Forest conservation acts to maintain, plan, and improve forested areas. Forests provide wildlife within a suitable habitat for living along with filtering groundwater and preventing runoff.

Methods to conserve forests : Conservation of forest can be done by :

Van Mahotsava : Van Mahotsava is an annual pan Indian tree planting festival. It is celebrated throughout the country in the first week of July month year.

Forest reserve : These are large protected areas of forest cover that are protected from human exploitation. Strict laws have been enacted to prevent the cutting of trees. Thus, forest reserves have been established to prevent deforestation and favoring plantation of more trees.

Chipko movement : The word chipko means " to stick" or "to embrace" or "to hug." Chipko movement was a non - violent movement aimed at protection and conservation of trees and forests from being destroyed. The villagers used to hug the trees and protect them from wood cutters from cutting them.

Reforestation : Reforestation is the process of planting new trees in areas where they have been removed by cutting or destroyed fire, diseases etc.

Laws to conserve forest : For conservation of forest different type of laws have been approved, like

Indian forest conservation act (1980) : According to this act no forest land can be diverted to non forest purpose without the approval of central government.

Indian forest conservation act ( 1927) : Basic objectives of this act is to establish village forest, reserved forest, and protected forest. It also check the movement of forest product and provide grazing.
