Fractions, Ratios and proportions are quantities used for comparing different quantities having same units. Now Let us Understand one by one
It describes a part of a whole and its denominator represents the total number of parts.
For Example:
1. To represent two parts out of 11 parts the fraction will be written as fraction
2. Ram has 5 books and Shyam has 7 books then share of Ram's books can be represented as
Total Books = No of Ram's books + No. of Shyam's Books = 5 + 7 = 12
Fraction Representing Ram's Share will be
A ratio is a comparison of two different quantities.
For Example:
1. To represent 2 parts out of 11 parts the ratio will be written as
parts : whole
2: 11
2. Ram has 5 books and Shyam has 7 books then to compare share of Ram's books with Shyam's books in terms of ratio can be represented as
No. of Ram's Books : No. of Shyam's Books
5 : 7
If two ratios are equal, then they are said to be in proportion.
Symbol “::” or “=” is used to equate the two ratios.
For Example:
1. Ratios 2:3 and 6:9 are proportional. ⇒ 2:3 :: 6:9 or 2:3 = 6:9
