Soaps And Detergents: Soaps arc usually obtained by the saponification of natural oils and fats with alkali such as caustic soda (NAOH), or caustic potash (KOH) or washing soda ().
Soaps produce sufficient lather with soft water. This lather emulsifies oily or greasy material and absorbs dirt particles, which are removed along with water .
Detergents can lather well even in hard water, as, unlike soaps, they do not form insoluble calcium or magnesium salts with hard water. Detergents are synthetic organic chemical substances. They have more cleaning properties than soaps. Detergents are made from hydrocarbons obtained from coal or petroleum. Washing powders contain only about 15-30 percent detergents by weight. The rest is made ot other chemicals added to impart it desired properties.
