Adjective of Number

Adjectives are words that describe or modify other words such as  like small, blue, and sharp are some examples of adjectives. They are usually positioned before the nouns and pronouns that they modify. Some sentences contain multiple adjectives.

Adjective of Number (or numerical adjective)

Adjective of Number shows how many persons or things are meant, or in what order a person or thing stands ; as,

The hand has five fingers.

Few cats like cold water.

There are no pictures in this book.

I have taught you many things.

All men must die.

Here are some ripe mangoes.

Most boys like cricket.

There are several mistakes in your exercise.

Sunday is the first day of the week.

Adjective of Quality

Adjective of Quality : - An adjective which is used in the sentence to express the size, shape, and color of a person, thing, animal, or place An adjective which is used in the sentence to express the size, shape, and color of a person, thing, animal, or place . some words related to this are : beautiful , large , wise , honest , foolish etc .

Example : - Nina’s hair is very shining and smooth. Here , shining and smooth is an adjective of quality as it shows the quality of Nina 's hair that it is shining and smooth .

 Kolkata is a large city.  Here , large is an adjective of quality as it shows the quality of city that it is large .

He is an honest man. Here , honest is an adjective of quality as it shows the quality of man that he is honest .

The foolish old crow tried to sing . Here , foolish old is an adjective of quality as it shows the quality of crow that it is foolish old .

Rules to remember adjective of quality : -

1. When two adjectives qualify the same noun , both the adjectives should be expressed in the same degree . For example

(i) She is the most active and energetic social worker in our club .

(ii) She is both cleverer and intelligent than her sister .

2. The order of adjectives qualifying a noun ( S S A C N M)

Size rightarrow Shape rightarrow Age rightarrow Colour rightarrow Nationality rightarrow Material rightarrow Noun

(I) Twenty year old black American Negro .

(II) A large glass room .

Adjective of Quantity

Adjective of Quantity : - Adjective of quantity indicates the amount or estimated amount of the noun or pronoun in the sentence. It does not provide information about exact numbers, it tells only the amount of noun in relative or whole terms . It shows how much of a thing is meant ; as, Eg . some , few , much , many , enough etc.

Examples :

  • I ate some rice. Here , some is an adjective of quantity as it shows the estimated amount of rice 
  • He showed much patience. Here , much is an adjective of quantity as it shows the number of patience he showed .
  • He has little intelligence. Here , little is an adjective of quantity as it shows the estimated number of intelligence he has .
  • We have had enough exercise. Here , enough is an adjective of quantity as it shows the number of exercises we have had .
  • Rules to remember adjective of quantity : -

  • Some- This adjective is used to signify quantity or degree in an affirmative sentence. For example- My mother asked me to buy some oranges.
  • Any- This adjective is used to signify quantity or degree in a negative or interrogative sentence. For example- I shall not buy any oranges (Negative).
  • Few- This adjective is used for objects which can be measured or counted.
  • For example- I can see only a few birds in the sky.
  • Little- This adjective is used for objects that cannot be measured or counted. For example- Sameer has little appreciation for hard work.
